Junkanoo Masquerade (Installation View In Situ) - A permanent, site-specific artwork commissioned for the Warwick Hotel Paradise Island (Bahamas). Photo courtesy Warwick Hotel Paradise Island Bahamas. Project Description: Gerakaris’ kaleidoscopic, large-scale artwork prominently spans the rear-wall of the Warwick Hotel's Lobby, visible from multiple perspectives. Completed in 2016 after extensive travel and research on the islands, the artist created “Junkanoo Masquerade” in direct response to its Bahamian surroundings and culture. This mural-scaled artwork riffs on the festive spirit of the Junkanoo Carnival, while also reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the Warwick Hotels. In “Junkanoo Masquerade”, Afro-Caribbean Mask-Heads brim with exotic plumage, while native Bahamian symbolism hums beneath a contemporary surface that collages ecstatic pattern with flora & fauna.
